Posted in : School of Medicine , comments closed

Is it possible to lose weight by eating more? Sure, if what you’re eating more of are high-fiber foods. How is this possible? Simply put, fiber is a natural calorie absorption blocker.

A study performed by the USDA found that women who doubled their fiber intake from 12 to 24 grams per day absorbed 90 fewer calories. This equals losing 10 lbs. over the course of a year. Fiber keeps you full, thereby decreasing the total amount of calories consumed per day.

Fiber is extremely important to health and weight loss. So much so, the U.S. Food & Nutrition Board has set the first recommended daily intakes: men up to age 50 need 38 grams of fiber per day and women need 25 grams per day. To reach these recommendations, a minimum of 6 servings of fruits and veggies and 3 servings of whole grains are needed daily.

So where can you find fiber? Here is a list of foods that will help you reach the daily fiber intake recommendations:

Onions (1/3 cup = 1 gram)
Broccoli (1/2 cup = 2 grams)
Oranges (1 orange = 3 grams)
Flaxseed (1 tbsp. = 1 gram) ~ sprinkle on cereal or in yogurt
Asian pears (1 pear = 4 grams)
Almond butter (2 tbsp. = 2 grams)
Hot chocolate (1 cup = 3 grams)
Rye bread (1 slice = 2 grams)
Beans (1/2 cup = 6 grams)
Oregano (1 tsp. = 1 gram)
Basil (1 tsp. = 1 gram)
Light popcorn (1 bag = 8 grams)
Chickpeas (1/2 cup = 6 grams)
Frozen chopped spinach (1/2 cup = 2 grams)
Whole wheat pasta (1 cup = 5 grams)

Other foods high in fiber include: oat bran, oatmeal, flour or whole wheat tortillas, mushrooms, sesame-seed buns, low-sodium V8, sweet potatoes, wild rice, cauliflower, carrots, nuts, and berries.

Why You Like Some Pictures More and Pricing-2 of 3 June 16, 2008

Posted in : Best Photography Resources , comments closed

Everyone likes what they like, “I don’t know art, but I like know what I like!” Okay, true that. When shopping at a market full of photo prints, you’re bound to fall in love with some images and then get your heart broken by the prices these starving artists have applied! So what’s artistically likable and what’s a price doing so far up there?

Ages ago, before phones, Internet and coffee shops, all people could do was paint and sculpt and pass on diseases for a good time. Two text book philosophers wondered what made some art so universally appealing and they wandered the known World to discover and formalize most of our Western rules of composition. They noted chiaroscuro, strong diagonals, repetitive shapes, leading lines and a zany but easy to find, ‘Rule of Thirds.’

Chiaroscuro was the 2D portrayal of objects using plenty of shadowed values giving a rich, almost 3D experience; the first buzz-through noted this as ‘full range’ in photography. Strong diagonals is just what it sounds like with dynamic, heart thumping lines racing across canvases and causing excitement in the minds of viewers. Repetitive shapes almost made patterns that mezmorized viewers and contributed to the balance of an image where a rectangular shape would appear over and over in different forms; or a circle or a bird shape, etc. Leading lines depended upon perspective illusion so that viewers felt they could travel into an image; walk down a path, through an orchard of trees or along a brick wall.

Following The Rule of Thirds is the fastest way to stop taking ordinary snapshots. The entire canvas or frame is overlaid with an imaginary tic-tac-toe board. Nine squares are the results of two lines across and two likes up and down. There are four intersections around the center square. It’s at these intersections that the focus or idea of the image is placed. This is the cure for the painfully dull “centeritis” that snapshots suffer from. It’s the most effective form of composition and the biggest secret weapon of artists. You’ll now notice movie characters off-center, magazine ads obeying this rule and some of your favorite photos employing some of these devices!

So why the $350 price tag at the market? In two paragraphs you just learned how to shot with wisdom and forethought… If they sell one image that week, they make rent. Perhaps the chemicals they used added up to gallons just to print three acceptable images. If the photo is from a far away land, you know they didn’t just beam there, they probably suffered expensive plane trips, lodging, walks through wilderness, tundra or alien cities and might have eaten food while they were away despite their scrawny, artistic-like appearance.

There is every reason to think that they should, finally reward themselves, but not by robbing children of college educations. Take a chance and make an offer. Ask for two prints and thirty or forty percent off. A little note saying ‘all prices firm’ indicates a trust fund baby. They already made rent, they would rather have the story of having sold a print for hundreds of dollars. If you give them the story, you’ll not be thanked, you’ll be ridiculed over caviar and Cheerios while some underground 80’s rock band guitars ‘cultured’ madness in the next room when they get home and call their friends.

Less than a hundred bucks is madness. Chemicals, developing, film, travel and talent are just too expensive to sell short. It’s not insane to think that three or four rolls of lovingly shot film produced nothing to sell. If you find a photographer with a few good prints overall and a low, three digit price tag (unframed), you’re probably face to face with a very respectable and honestly hardworking artist. The rule of thumb is that one roll might yield two to four keepers. One in five keepers are worth selling to strangers. So a little understanding of why you like what you like, a warning of when you’re being fleeced and a little sympathy to the deserving artist in the markets we all love wraps up this essay.

C>E: Results vs. Reasons, Which Side of the Equation Are You On? June 14, 2008

Posted in : Misc , comments closed

So what is empowerment? Empowerment is taking the results over the reasons every time. When things happen (and they will happen), how you decide to view the situation has a direct impact on how the situation is recorded in your memory. Each person receives about 2 million bytes of information per second (bps). Of that 2 million bps, we can only pay attention to 134 bps. So if you really think about it, more information is being presented than we can really process. When you decide consciously what information you pay attention to, and how you allow that information to impact you, you allow yourself to be on the cause side of the equation. I know that this is different thinking from what you’re used to. It will take an open mind for this to work. Here’s the question for you. Are you getting the results that you want? I ask you, what side of the equation are you on? I can tell you if change your thinking, you will change your world.

Cause and effect (C and E) puts you in the driver’s seat. It allows you to take control and to be responsible for your actions. You will no longer have an external locus of control; instead, you will have an internal compass. This internal compass ultimately empowers you.

For example, imagine yourself getting onto the highway. As soon as you make the turn to get on the highway, you notice there is heavy traffic. At that moment, you make a choice. The choice at that moment is to be upset or to be at peace with the traffic. You can make the decision to be at peace by recognizing that there is a purpose, at that point, for where you are. Now, there are other choices you can make about the traffic as well. One choice is to become frustrated, and allow all of the reasons you need to be somewhere else begin to frustrate you. You can allow that time in the car to literally impact your whole day negatively. You can sit in the traffic, angry and bitter. You’ll get to work and be upset, and in turn will affect the first person you come in contact with. Your energy, in turn, affects their day. This trickles throughout the day until the end of the day when you’re right back in traffic.

I’m sure you’re asking, “How I can be on the cause side with an event I did not cause?” It’s your belief about the event that changes the event itself. Your belief can reframe the event in a more empowering light. If we took this same scenario and approached it from the cause side of the event, once you got onto the highway and you saw the traffic, you would have immediately taken a deep breath and began to determine how you could make the best out of the situation. For example, you could be overjoyed that you now have time to listen to powerful motivational speakers on audio! It’s all in how you look at each particular situation. Every second of the day, you make a choice. You can choose to be happy, or you can choose to be sad, angry, frustrated, or upset. What choice are you making?

Action — 1. When you encounter a situation today that begins to upset, annoy, or irritate you, consider how you can use or turn it to your benefit. 2. Just for one day, resist the urge to make excuses, to others and to yourself.

MCSE Certification – Better Than Novell?

Posted in : Technology Management , comments closed

In this article we’re going to cover the pros and cons of getting a Microsoft Certification as opposed to getting a Novell certification. To start with, the arguments as to which networking software is actually better will no doubt go on for as long as these two companies are in business. The purpose of this article in not to determine which system is better. The purpose is to point out the differences between the two in relation to how easy or hard it will be to get a certification and hold a job.

The first glaring difference between a Novell certification and an MCSE certification is the intensity of the courses required for each certification. As was pointed out in an earlier article, to get an MCSE one has to take seven exams, five core exams and two electives. The courses for these exams are long and difficult. The length of time, obviously, to get an MCSE is astronomical. On the other hand to get a Novell CNE certification requires only five exams. Two less exams may not seem like much but considering each course can take you months you’re talking about taking about a half a year off your training time. So this needs to be considered when choosing between the two.

The next thing you need to take into consideration is the operating system itself. Because an MCSE is a windows based certification and Microsoft Windows is pretty much the most popular operating system on the market, that means you will have more software written by third party vendors made especially for windows products. So getting an MCSE will make your life a lot easier in the actual work environment because you will not be dealing with as many compatibility issues as you will if you become a Novell CNE and end up working with NetWare. Suffice it to say, your life will be far from easy when it comes to making things work.

Then there are the exams themselves. Naturally everyone will have their own opinion on this but the general consensus is that the Microsoft Exams are easier because they are dealing with operating systems that we are already more familiar with because of our everyday working knowledge of Windows. Novell NetWare is not as intuitive and most say that it requires more “learning” than Microsoft.

Then there is the issue of getting your job. The truth of the matter is, more people use Microsoft products, not so much because they are better but because of the tight hold they have on the market. So getting a job with an MCSE is going to be a lot easier than getting a job with a Novell CNE. The main reason for the dominance of Microsoft networking versus Novell is because of the file and printing services which have always been a problem with Novell.

If you are looking for perfection in either case you have got a long wait. Both networking systems have their pluses and minuses. As a networking professional one needs to decide what is most important when choosing which direction to take, ease of use or ease of passing your exam.

How To Determine Your Customer’s Value June 13, 2008

Posted in : Money Making , comments closed

This literally can be the most profitable thing you’ll ever
do for your business and that is to understand exploiting
the actual value of your customer. It’s been called the
Marginal Net Worth and the Lifetime Value.

What is the current worth of one of your customers or
prospects? It’s the total profit of an average customer
over the lifetime that they do business with you. That
includes all subsequent sales minus advertising/marketing
and your fulfillment expenses.

Let’s say the average customer brings you $75 per sale.
They re-purchase 3 more times in a year. Their average
order amount is $300. On each $300 reorder, you make $150
gross profit The average life lasts 2 years. Every new
customer is worth $975.

You reach the 975 by adding the $75 initial profit to the 3
other purchases each year of $300. Only $150 is profit, so
$150 times 3 equals $450. If they do that for 2 straight
years, that’s $900 plus the original $75.

If this is our average customer and they’re worth $975 in
profit and it only costs you $30 through your advertising/
marketing expenses to get them, every time you spend $30
you receive $975 back .

You would be foolish not to increase your advertising/
marketing and promotional budget to produce as many of
these $30 cost customers so you would spend $30 over and
over and over again to get $975 back

Theoretically, you could spend $975 to get that customer
because you know they will come back and spend $975 and you
will break-even. Of course, we don’t want to do this.
Remember, this is an average customer. Some will buy more
and some will buy less This is an average number.

Now you “know you can spend up to $975. You could just as
easily be spending 100% of your $75 profit just to get that
first sale because that’s just the first sale’s profit, and
you’ll still end up with $975 over the next 2 years.

If you offered to give that $75 service for free and it
doubles your customers, it “would double your profits over
the next 2 years.

One in 100 business owners think about this You want to
spend everything you can justify to bring in a customer as
long as that customer costs you less than they earn you. If
you can’t afford to spend more than the entire profit from
the first sale, remember you’ll be making money just in a
few months from them. Start out spending what your cash
flow can justify. After a quarter or several months after
their re-order profits come in, then you can step up your
ad budget.

Fixed Rate Mortgage – All You Need to Know

Posted in : The World Of Real Estate , comments closed

Mortgages with fixed interest rates offer a degree of safety adjustable rate mortgages do not. With energy prices spiraling out of control and uncertainty over inflation here is why you need a fixed rate mortgage.

Traditional fixed rate mortgages, the kind your grandparents had, are making a comeback. Fixed interest rate mortgages typically come with term lengths of 15 or 30 years. The main advantage of a fixed rate loan is your payment will remain fixed for the duration of the mortgage.

Selecting a fixed rate mortgage will protect you from the economy. Interest rate hikes will not affect your monthly payment amount. This degree of financial safety could save you a lot of grief if you experience financial difficulties down the road.

The next factor to consider when choosing a fixed rate mortgage is the term length. Term length is the amount of time the lender grants you to repay the loan. Common term lengths for fixed rate mortgages are 15 and 30 year loans.

Thirty year loans offer lower payments amounts; however, these loans come with higher interest rates because of increased risk to the lender. You build equity in your home at a much slower rate because mortgage loans are front-loaded with interest. This means in the beginning, more of your monthly payment goes to pay interest than loan principal. A side benefit of paying more interest up front is your tax deduction will be greater.

The advantage of a 15 year mortgage is that you build equity in your home much faster. A 15 year mortgage comes with a lower interest rate because there is less risk to the lender. If you choose a 15 year mortgage your monthly payment will be higher; however, you will pay less interest each month to the lender.

With all the uncertainty in today’s economy why risk your financial well-being on an adjustable rate mortgage? Interest rates are still at historically low levels; invest some time doing your homework and shopping for a lender and you can find excellent deals on traditional fixed rate mortgages.

Ample Benefits In Teaming Podcast Radio With Internet Marketing June 12, 2008

Posted in : Podcasters Lair , comments closed

As the host and Executive Producer of Google’s “number one” ranked PodCast Radio Show, I believe we have made a fairly significant discovery that you can almost immediately put in motion to bolster your Internet Marketing efforts, too.

The Art Of PodCasting

There is no dispute that streaming media has been deployed effectively across the Internet now for a number of years. Enthusiasts and professionals alike have clearly figured out how to write copy (for the spoken word), operate simple audio recording software applications, plug in a microphone and record basic as well as highly produced audio messages, presentations, training and yes, even advertisements.

Podcasting is truly nothing more than what I refer to as a blog “plug-in”. That is, combining a simple syndicatable blog with an audio component. The practice is very much like ordinary audio streaming (media delivery from server to browser), but with the ability to capture, download and install (automatically on the date and time of your choice) to either a local PC or directly into any one of today’s available hand-held audio devices such as iRiver, iPod or Creative Zen.

PodCast Marketing Opportunities

Today’s Internet marketers can now combine the power and almost lightning speed of blog syndication with valuable training and advertising messages (just like you might hear across your FM dial).

The PodCast Limit Is Your Imagination

Imagine uniting the ability to syndicate your blog and PodCast (audio component) globally in a matter of seconds.

You could easily and almost effortlessly deliver the following for added impact to your awaiting audience:

1. Product Information

2. Expert Interviews

3. Tutorials (FAQs)

4. Advertisements

5. Public Service Announcements (PSAs)

6. Fund Raising

7. Religious Programming

8. Self-Help and Personal Development

9. Coaching and Consulting

10. Meetings and Reporting

11. Network Marketing Development

These are just a tiny smattering of how you could merge blogging and PodCasting into your Internet Marketing model.

Building Strong Community

With blogging and PodCasting you are really building a more robust interactive community of listeners (prospects and customers). The blogging component allows for the easy implementation of questions, comments and suggestions from listeners (prospects and existing customers) directly into each and every blog/podcast post you make. Internet “stickiness” is key to nurturing a healthy Internet base. PodCasting is undeniably one perfect solution that can do just that for you.

A Search Engine Love Affair

Mindful search engine optimization practices are paramount and required if you are serious about leveling the Net’s playing field. Blogging and PodCasting will catapult your position faster than just about any other optimization method available anywhere.

Your PodCast (Audio Blog) will be speak very friendly to those web crawlers in that Podcsting puts in proper pecking order what I like to call the “Search Engine Algorithm – Big 3″.

They are:

1. Link Popularity

2. Text Rich

3. Link Rich
