And the big day arrives … you have to get out there and secure your first customer. It all looked so easy when you were planning, but now this is real and doesn’t seem as effortless as you thought.
What practical steps can you take to ensure your business gets off to a flying start?
Put a Plan in Place
If you didn’t write a Business Plan (tut tut!) then putting pen to paper is your first step. You have to careful plan what you want to achieve and what you are trying to do. A Plan will help crystalise your thoughts and ideas and act as a spring board for creative thought.
It also will be a useful boost when you come to review your progress against what you set out to achieve – a cause for celebration or a kick up the backside!
The key element in your Plan is to spell out exactly who your typical customer is going to be. Are they young or old? Well off, or on the look out for bargains? Single or married?
Once you have clearly defined who you are after then chasing your first sale becomes easier.
E-Mail All Your Contacts
You may not think that personal friends and family may be interested in your product or service, but don’t forget that they have friends and family as well and so can help spread the word!
E-mail every one in your address book and tell them, if they don’t already know, that you are starting up in business and need their help. In your e-mail describe what you do and the products you offer and request that they forward it to everyone in their address book. A bit ’spammy’ I know but when such a note comes from someone you know then it doesn’t seem so bad.
For those family and friends who don’t have e-mail, call them, write to them, to officially launch your business. Very quickly word will spread and enquiries and orders will start to flood in.
Ask For a Referral
It’s possible you may have ‘road-tested’ your business before you decided to go full time. In that case you will already have a small database of customers. Ask them if they can provide you with some names of people or businesses whom they think may be interested in what you have on offer.
A referral, or positive recommendation, is a powerful and easy way to give your business a kick start. If you want, why not offer a small gift, or a discount on the next sale, for all customers who refer someone to you? This gesture will further cement your relationship.
Tell Everyone You Meet
Be a walking advertising board for your business! Find any opportunity to tell people, especially strangers, what you do. Be enthusiastic! Have a rehearsed opening which encapsulates everything about the benefits and problems your business offers and solves.
Take your business cards wherever you go and leave them all over the place! Supermarkets, restaurants, shops, anywhere where people will find them.
Be a Media Star
The local newspaper or radio stations are always on the look out for stories which are of interest to the locality. Don’t expect them to run a story along the lines of ‘And today, Joe Bloggs has just started in business doing …’. Your story needs to be interesting and have an unusual slant. Did you travel the world and come up with your idea whilst riding a train in India? Did you have a flash of inspiration following a shocking experience? Carry out a survey which shows that local people are crying out for a service such as yours. Think of something that will grab the editor’s attention and this will increase your chances of appearing in print.
Build Relationships
Don’t be disappointed if you don’t get a sale on the first approach. Sometimes you have to patient. A way of achieving your batch of first sales is to concentrate on building a relationship with your prospective clients. Keep in touch, remind them you are still around and, assuming you have targeted correctly, they may eventually place that coveted order!

Just like a computer absorbs raw data, so does your mind. Within your mind a culture, within itself, has grown. Many people feel like they have no control of their own mind, because this culture has become negative. The negativity is a result of past experiences, being in a negative environment, or being under the influence of unconstructive ideas.
Similar to a computer virus, you have to identify it quickly, to avoid letting it spread within your mind. You can also pass this virus of negative thinking to people around you. As a result you are spreading negative energy around, like “weeds in a field.”
Much like a farmer, you cultivate too. The energy in your mind is the crop, and it is up to you, whether it is weeds or wheat. If you have a farm and let a field take care of itself; you will be lucky to have any kind of a crop, from it.
This is the same with the energy within your mind.
You have to option to pick quality seeds: Information, in the form of books, eBooks, DVD’s, CD’s, lectures, courses, workshops, and seminars. This is learning, for the sake of self-improvement, and it results in a positive mind-set.
However, your work is not finished, because you must still reinforce the lessons, and keep everything in a focused order. This might be compared to fertilizing, watering, and “weeding the mind.” You have to work at it continually or the weeds will grow back. This, my friend, is meditation, and one of the reasons why we meditate, in the first place.
Meditation is controlled focus on an object, thought, or task without judgment.
This process makes it possible to look at all situations objectively. You can find solutions, turn negative situations into positive learning experiences, and create your own positive mindset. As a result of this you will make new friends, reach goals, handle problems easily, and develop an indomitable spirit.
Remember the last time you made an accomplishment. That feeling, and that ability, are within all of us. It is a formula for success, but you have to take action. Action is something that the vast majority of people will never take.
Learn to separate yourself from “the pack,” through education, meditation, and action.

Phishing and Pharming: Dangerous Scams December 27, 2008
Posted in : Security Parlor , comments closedAs soon as almost all computer users already got used to — or at least heard about — the word “phishing”, another somewhat confusing word appeared. Pharming. Does it differ from phishing — if yes, how?
Two Pharmings
Actually, two completely different fields use the term “pharming” now. We can say there exist two separate “pharmings”.
If genetics or businessmen from pharmaceutical industry are talking about pharming (spelled like that) it might have nothing to do with computers. This word has long been familiar to genetic engineers. For them, it’s a merger of “farming” and “pharmaceutical” and means the genetic engineering technique — inserting extraneous genes into host animals or plants in order to make them produce some pharmaceutical product. Although it is very interesting matter, this article isn’t about it.
As for PC users, the term “pharming” recently emerged to denote exploitation of a vulnerability in the DNS server software caused by malicious code. This code allows the cybercriminal who contaminated this PC with it to redirect traffic from one IP-address to the one he specified. In other words, a user who types in a URL goes to another web site, not the one he wanted to–and isn’t supposed to notice the difference.
Usually such a website is disguised to look like a legitimate one — of a bank or a credit card company. Sites of this kind are used solely to steal users’ confidential information such as passwords, PIN numbers, SSNs and account numbers.
Dangerous Scams
A fake website that’s what “traditional” phishing has in common with pharming. This scam can fool even an experienced computer user, and it makes pharming a grave threat. The danger here is that users don’t click an email link to get to a counterfeit website.
Most people enter their personal information, unaware of possible fraud. Why should they suspect anything if they type the URL themselves, not following any links in a suspiciously-looking email?
Unfortunately, “ordinary” phishers are also getting smarter. They eagerly learn; there is too much money involved to make criminals earnest students. At first phishing consisted only of a social engineering scam in which phishers spammed consumer e-mail accounts with letters ostensibly from banks. The more people got aware of the scam, the less spelling mistakes these messages contained, and the more fraudulent websites looked like legitimate ones.
Since about November 2004 there has been a lot of publications of a scheme which at first was seen as a new kind of phishing. This technique includes contaminating a PC with a Trojan horse program. The problem is that this Trojan contains a keylogger which lurks at the background until the user of the infected PC visits one of the specified websites. Then the keylogger comes to life to do what it was created for — to steal information.
It seems that this technique is actually a separate scam aimed at stealing personal information and such attacks are on the rise. Security vendor Symantec warns about commercialisation of malware — cybercriminals prefer cash to fun, so various kinds of information-stealing software are used more actively.
Spy Audit survey made by ISP Earthlink and Webroot Software also shows disturbing figures – 33.17% PCs contaminated with some program with information stealing capability.
However, more sophisticated identity theft attempts coexist with “old-fashioned” phishing scams. That is why users should not forget the advice which they all are likely to have learned by heart:
- Never follow a link in an email, if it claims to be from a financial institution
- Never open an attachment if the email is from somebody you don’t know
- Protect your PC from malware
- Stay on the alert

good thing to do.
However, your specific business, your target market and what you
are trying to accomplish through your marketing campaign will be
central to developing an effective marketing campaign for your
business.
Before you even consider sending out email marketing messages,
there are some tasks to be undertaken to make sure that your
marketing efforts aren’t wasted.
First of all, you absolutely have to know your target market and
its characteristics. This knowledge can be gained through market
research.
The demographics of your target audience, such as gender, age and
median income, will play a role in crafting your messages in a
manner that will appeal to the audience receiving them.
Learning the target audiences buying patterns can be helpful as
well. Are they impulse shoppers? Are they bargain shoppers or do
they value quality over price? Answering these questions will
help you to develop an appropriate copywriting strategy for your
marketing materials.
Another important factor in designing an email marketing campaign
is to obtain a list of email addresses for individuals in your
target market. Just any old list isn’t going to be effective.
You need an opt-in list of individuals who actually want to
receive information about the products or services that you are
promoting.
Sometimes you can buy a so-called opt-in list of email addresses
for people who have requested information that you may be
providing, but honestly, I don’t consider that to be an opt-in
list.
Rather I consider people who have provided their contact
information specifically requesting information from your company

In my opinion, to build your own opt-in list you should offer
something of value, such as a newsletter or free reports to
website visitors.
When and only when they opt to receive such information, should
they be added to your opt-in list of subscribers who receive
email marketing messages from you.
Your messages should also contain an opt-out option where the
receivers of the message have the option to be removed from your
mailing list.
Otherwise, your messages may be considered to SPAM (unsolicited
email) which is not only annoying, but is also illegal now.
When you send SPAM, you also stand the risk of having your email
address or server blacklisted with internet service providers
which will effectively shut down the delivery of your email
messages.
When writing your email marketing messages there are some
important copywriting techniques that you can use to increase the
effectiveness of your campaign.
First, consider personalizing your messages by using the
recipients’ names and ensuring that the information they receive
is actually something they have indicated that they have an
interest in.
Be sure that your messages contain compelling benefits to the
reader along with a clear call to action that creates a sense of
urgency.
It is also important that the format of your email is able to be
read by all recipients. So, the format of the messages is
something to consider.
If you use plain text, it is a little more difficult to call
attention to specific portions of the message; however, most
anyone will be able to open and read the message if you send it
in plain text format.
If you use HTML format or even rich text, there will likely be
some recipients that are unable to open or read your email
messages.

Get Control of Your E-Mail, Before It Controls You

and responding to e-mail. If you run an online business
you may receive hundreds of messages a day. It comes
with the territory and unfortunately, there’s no escaping
it. Keeping up with your e-mail is very important to your
success online and you should make every attempt to
answer any and all messages within 24 to 48 hours.
Here are some tips for streamlining the amount of time
you spend managing your inbox.
1) Folders: Set up folders to better organize your e-mail
and find things more readily when you need them. For
example, you may want to set up folders named after indiv-
uals you get frequent mail from, folders for ezines you
receive, software receipts, and others. When you need
something, you will know exactly where to find it.
2) Blocked Senders List: Face it, we all get Spam
and the more active you are online, the more of it
you’ll receive. Take it from me, I know. I get
hundreds daily on everything from growing certain
parts of my anatomy (including ones I don’t have),
to how I can become a millionaire overnight. An
easy way to rid yourself of Spam is to highlight
the message and add it to your email client’s blocked
sender’s list. Most all programs include this feature.
Once you add someone to this list you’ll never receive
another e-mail from that address again.

3) Message Rules: Make sure you set up message rules
or filters as they can automate some tasks and move

Also known as autoresponders, message rules make it
easy to automatically reply to messages, send messages
directly to the trash and more. This is a powerful
feature; study it and use it.
4) Empty Deleted/Sent Folders: Make sure you go into
your sent box and deleted message folders on a regular
basis and delete their contents. Messages can pile up
quickly and slow down your e-mail client substantially.
5) Software: Many software manufacturers make add on module
software for many of the popular e-mail clients like
Outlook and Outlook Express. If the program doesn’t
have a feature you need, you may find an inexpensive
package that will extend your e-mail client’s capabilities.

6) Do Something: Don’t allow messages to build up in your
inbox or before you know it you’ll be buried alive in
messages. As you go through your mail, try to act on
every piece of mail you receive immediately.Reply to
it, delete it, or file it in one of your folders.
Just make sure you do something. If you follow this
advice you’ll never end up with 500 sitting in your
inbox demanding your attention.
7) Print It: If you’re like me, you subscribe to a lot
of ezines. If you don’t have time to read them online
do what I do: print them out and take them on the road
with you. I read them while waiting for appointments or
when I’m on break or lunch at my night job.
Customize Layouts: Most e-mail clients allow you
to customize the toolbars and look of your program.
Add the features you use most often to the toolbars
and change the look of the layout to suit your needs.
9) Return Receipts: Have you ever sent a message and
wondered if the recipient ever received it? Send your
e-mail with a “return receipt” request and you’ll be
sent a notification by e-mail when they have read it.
The reader can stop this message from going out to you,
but nine out of ten don’t mind and allow the reply.
10) Message Priority: When you send an e-mail you
can set the priority of the message to “high,” which
puts a red marker or flag next to it when the recipient
receives it. This tells the reader that the message
is very important and may help motivate them to
reply sooner. Just don’t get in the habit of sending
every message this way or people will get annoyed.
