Serious poker players are always seeking to improve their game. Since poker is a game where making the wrong decision means a loss, you have to play the best game you can based on the knowledge you have acquired. There is another element equally important to experience and skill – and that is stamina.

Poker online players sometimes stay in the game too long, and grow weary, hungry and just too worn out to make good decisions. When you make poor decisions in poker, you lose. It is essential to get up from the table and refresh yourself after a few hours of play. Go get something to eat and stretch out your body. This is especially true after taking a bad beat or feeling frustrated about your hands.

It doesn’t matter if you’re playing poker online or in live poker room. Always bring your best self to the table. If you are angry or upset about other matters in your life, it will probably interfere with your poker decisions. You must leave those feelings behind when you are playing poker. It takes intense concentration to excel at poker, and if you are not at your physical or emotional best, you are going to make mistakes.

Recognize when you are growing too tired to play, or too upset to think straight, and step away from the table or computer.

One of the greatest debates in the online poker world if whether the greatest gambling game on the planet owes more to skill or to luck. This dilemma takes center stage in Intacto, a 2002 film about individuals with a “gift” of luckiness. These individuals have extreme luckiness, both at the poker table and in every day life. For example, some of the gifted individual has have survived plane crashes or other life threatening situation and emerged unscathed. The test their luck in variety of ways, and finally decide that they are essentially untouchable. They decide that their luck will not run out in the near future.

It is not long before the lucky individuals turn their hand to online poker. As one would think by their prominent personality traits, the lucky people do extremely well. A key feature of the plot is the ability to transfer the luck. Of course, this brings question to mind about the interaction of luck and skill at poker. If luck can be transferred, it is not the skills of the player that actually matter. The question of luck is another issue all together, because some players adamantly do not believe that luck has a major role at the table. Intacto disagrees with this idea, and clearly states that luck is the main component of gambling success.

Middle Position Play May 6, 2009

Playing poker in the middle position at the casino give you a lot more options that you have when playing in the early position. The later your position, the more aware you are of how the players around you are going to act, and the less anticipating you’ll have to do. The means you can be a bit more loosely when choosing what hands you want to play.

Say you are at a table of eight poker players and you’re holding a King-10 suited. It’s not a great hand, but it’s playable. It’s worth a big blind, but not a whole lot more than that. If you are in the fifth position, you get to see what four people are doing, and you only need to be able to read the last three. Will any of them raise before the flop? If you’ve been a good poker player and you’ve paid attention to your opponents, you should have a good idea about what they are going to do.

With the added info you’ll have from the players in front of you, you can attempt to play middle pairs, suited connectors, and other medium-ranked hands. Just don’t be too stubborn to fold if he flop doesn’t go your way.

Scotty Nguyen has become one of the most popular players in all of online poker, mainly for his affable, fun-loving personality and most certainly also his killer black curly hair. Though Scotty can’t seem to get through a single sentence without appending the word ‘baby’ in every pause, there is something about his relaxed demeanor and good attitude that makes him easy to root for.

Underneath the big persona, though, Scotty Nguyen is one hell of a card player, as proved by his many appearances in major tournaments, not to mention his win of the main event of the World Series of Poker. Scotty is known for his solid if slightly erratic play, where based on a whim of intuition, he can turn his large persona into a battering ram that will take down a pot just on expectation alone. For this, he’s developed a reputation for making strange, random bluffs, though for the most part, Nguyen knows his opponents so well, he is rarely caught putting money in without the best of it, or a huge draw.

On a short list of poker players you might like to end up with a poker table for entertainment’s sake, I’d imagine Nguyen appears high up on more lists than most, regardless of the fact that in the end he’ll probably end up with all of your chips.

Johnny Chan: Born in Canton, China, Chan has won 10 WSOP Bracelets including back-to-back Championships in 1987 and 1988. In 2005, Chan became the first poker player to win ten World Series of Poker titles. Chan is tied with Doyle Brunson with 10 SWOP bracelets, and behind Phil Helmuth by one. He was inducted into the Poker Hall of Fame in 2002. .

T.J. Cloutier: a Texas native, Cloutier has won five WSOP bracelets since 1983. He graduated from Berkeley University and is a former professional football player. His skill makes him one of the all time winning poker champions; and he is the author of acclaimed poker books.

Martin de Knijff: Born in Stockholm, Sweden, Martin became a professional sports bettor right out of high school; and has played championship bridge since he was 21. When he won the largest ever single prize at the time at the WPT Five Star Poker Classic, de Knijff gained a reputation as an ace card player. He attributes his skills to Brunson’s “Super Systems” book.

Freddy Deeb: Freddy was born in Beirut, Lebanon, and moved to the United States to attend college, where he studied mechanical engineering. When war in his native country disrupted his life, he took up poker to earn money and claims that he never held a regular job in his life other than poker player.

Annie Duke: Sister of poker professional, Howard Lederer, Annie played poker as a child with her family. After earning a Masters Degree from Columbia University, she dropped out of a doctorate program in psychology to take up poker. She became a winning player in Montana poker rooms; then went on to play tournaments in Las Vegas, where she finished tenth in the 2000 WSOP while she was nine months pregnant. She also won the 2004 WSOP Invitational Championship in 2004. Duke is the mother of four children and has achieved more “in the money” finishes at the WSOP than any other female.

There are several online poker books out describing anything from poker strategy to different types of poker games. These poker books can be interesting to read. Can they really help? The different types of books out there for poker can be confusing and at times not helping your skill.

Poker books coming in several different themes and styles at times only serve as guidelines or a possibility of an interesting reading experience. Many of these books tell of the ‘winning strategy’ that will help your poker game. However, with poker, there are several factors that can make you win or loose a game and poker books can’t predict necessarily what the player will do.

The books that are out there about poker can serve as a guideline to help the initial beginner with poker. Ways of learning to play that are unfamiliar to them, or learning just the basics of a game such as Texas holdem, can help them when entering a new poker game. For the veteran player, these books may become a hindrance in their poker playing.

Overall, poker has different methods in playing based on rules and style of the player and the poker game itself. A poker book will not necessarily help with these two things when playing against other players who maybe very unpredictable.
