Once again, the issue of workers’ safety and the employers’ irresponsible attitude has appeared as a major concern for the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) after a worker fell from a height and sustained serious injuries. The Kettering Magistrates Court has found Dodson and Horrell Ltd., an animal feed manufacturing company, guilty of violating the Health and Safety at Work Regulations, 1999. The court has ordered the company to pay a penalty of £4255 pounds (including costs) for the violation of section 3(1)a of the said Regulations .It was found that the accused failed to analyse the risks involved in working under certain situations.

The incident occurred on one of the company’s working sites in Ringstead, Northamptonshire, on July 17 2008. A 53 year old employee, while applying oil on the chains of the machine used for stacking animal feed bags, fell almost six feet, breaking his ribs and severely damaging his lungs.

Prosecutor for the HSE, Inspector Michelle Morrison, stressed at the need for implementation of sufficient safety measures to protect workers from these kinds of accidents, which leaves almost a 1000 workers injured every month.
